A fresh debate has erupted on social media following the release of promotional materials for Agbara Nla, an upcoming film from the Mount Zion Faith Ministries film stable.

The controversy began when social commentator Ifẹṣọlá criticized Mount Zion and similar Christian productions, accusing them of perpetuating narratives that portray Yoruba spirituality as evil while presenting Christianity as inherently superior. According to her, audiences are becoming more critical of such portrayals and are questioning what she described as decades of cultural stereotyping in faith-based films.

Responding to the criticism, filmmaker and actor Joshua Mike-Bamiloye defended Mount Zion’s body of work, arguing that the ministry celebrates Yoruba culture through its language, proverbs, traditions, and royal institutions while maintaining a Christian worldview.

Joshua further stated that Mount Zion’s message is not a conflict between Yoruba culture and Christianity, but rather a spiritual distinction between good and evil, regardless of geographical or cultural origins. He also challenged critics to assess the ministry’s entire catalogue rather than judging its work based on a limited number of productions set in traditional environments.

The exchange has reignited a long-running conversation about the intersection of faith, culture, and storytelling in Nigeria. While some agree that Christian films have historically portrayed indigenous spiritual practices negatively, others argue that filmmakers have the right to express their theological convictions through their art.

With Agbara Nla scheduled for release on October 1, the discussion highlights the growing scrutiny facing faith-based content in an era where audiences are increasingly engaging with questions of culture, identity, and representation.
