Tobbi and Tommi of Kansas City, MO have been singing since the ages of 11 and 6 years old, respectively. Music and singing is very common in their family. Tobbi and Tommi were introduced to Donald Lawrence in the year 2000 by DeWayne Woods (also of Kansas City, MO) shortly after Woods was called upon to minister with Donald Lawrence. From that time forward, Tobbi and Tommi have ministered as a part of a backing vocalist ensemble for Lawrence now referred to as The Company. Donald Lawrence has gone on to win Stellar Awards, Grammy Awards and other prestigious accolades. Tobbi and Tommi have been gifted the opportunity to travel abroad and minister nationally and internationally with some of the music industry’s most distinguished artists. They have shared the stage with Chaka Kahn, Patti Labelle, Mary Mary, Vanessa Bell-Armstrong, Hezekiah Walker, Donnie McClurkin, Jason Crabb, Ricky Dillard, Kim Burrell, Beverly Crawford, Pastor Shirley Caesar and many others. Tobbi and Tommi are currently featured on a new rendition of “Through the Fire” (originally recorded by Chaka Kahn), and this song is on Donald Lawrence’s newest project “Your Righteous Mind”. Tobbi and Tommi have sung on the Grammy Awards (2005), BET’s 106 & Gospel (2009), Stellar Awards (2006, 2008, 2010), Dove Awards (2010), TBN (2010) and other major television networks. Tobbi and Tommi are also wonderful writers and composers who have co-created with Donald Lawrence.
The ladies are finally stepping out with the release of their highly anticipated single, “Light” on July 9th, 2013. “This song “LIGHT” should receive positive responses from music critics, emphasis being on the superb quality of its production. I for one personally enjoyed the beats which i can describe as “beats that don’t quit”. The song in itself as a whole can be termed that rare tag “fabulous real music” with a glowing crispy production, a very melodious/catchy hook and beat for ages. There’s something about the chorus which will allow me categorically say that, more than most female singers this duo understand the funky art of singing rhythmically and this is a prime example. I can further describe it as “an instantly addictive and a bouncy featherweight funk jazz track” accompanied with the realism of her vocal dexterity which has made this record somewhat special. Finally it contains a jumble of feelings and emotions which makes it come alive and never tiring, the song brings a general feeling of jubilation and still passes the message of Christ as it should.
