Artist Profile: LaToria is a Christian Hip Hop artist who has currently released one studio album entitled A Simple Task. Her A.O.1 EP released in March 2011. She is also a member of Heels and Kicks Music, previously known as the Christian Female Rap Network which is
an international network of over 150 Christian Female artists.
Born and raised in Dallas, TX, LaToria grew up the oldest in a household of 5 children. Under all too familiar circumstances, her father was not in the picture. She was primarily raised by her mother and aunt. At the age of 7, LaToria fell in love with Hip Hop. She looked up to female artists such as, Queen Latifah and MC Lyte, because of their no nonsense attitude and charismatic ability to flow. Growing up in a Christian household, she desired to do the same thing but in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. With no exposure to any examples of Christian Hip Hop, this dream slowly began to fade as the years progressed.
LaToria never lost her love for music. In 2006, she graduated with a bachelorâs degree in Broadcast Management. Despite this accomplishment, she found herself in a very luke warm state in regards to her life, passion and zeal for Christ. Through a mutual friend, she met a producer named Len and he noticed something different in her. One day he happened to ask if she rapped. Little did he know, LaToria wrote in her private time very often. After meeting Len, she was led to take a chance and pursue the childhood dream of becoming a Christian rapper.
In a yearâs time, LaToria began to walk closer with the Lord. After much stumbling and striving, she rededicated her life to Christ. She then became a member of a local church and joined their young adult ministry. During this time, she released her first album, A Simple Task. This project drew a very diverse fan base because of the versatility of sound, her tendency to incorporate Spanish in her music, and her slightly aggressive demeanor behind the mic. She started to perform at open mic events and church functions. Through these performances, she began to develop her stage presence and grew as an artist. Each ministry engagement opened a door that granted her the opportunity to share what God gave her.
LaToria also became one of the core members of a very vital organization known as the CFRN or TheChristian Female Rap Network, headed by Octavia Harris. This network is an international network of femcees, singers, spoken word artists and preachers who desire to share the Gospel through different creative avenues. She was nominated for best Female Emcee in the DFW area in 2007 and won her first award. She also recently won the award for Best Overall Songwriter at the Shine conference in Orlando. Since this time, she has been invited to minister in various places such as Luis Palauâs Celebrate Freedom event, correctional facilities, colleges, youth conferences, Urban League celebrations and a host of other events. LaToria has also had the privilege of sharing the stage with artist such as Tedashii (Reach Records), Flame (Clear Sight Music) as well as featuring on several compilations, mixtapes and projects.
A.O.1, her current EP, will give the listener a glance into LaToriaâs life, her journey and her heart for God. She is also currently working on her sophomore project, expected to release in 2014. Her hope is that through the music, she will inspire those who donât know Christ and even those who do, to seek after a deeper, life-changing, relationship by coming to know Him as their personal Lord and Savior. LaToriaâs aim is to uniquely express the freedom and fulfillment that comes from walking with Christ through her energetic demeanor, no nonsense attitude, and Godâs Spirit. Â
