Author of My Life, written in 2012, was birthed as many of Imani’s songs are – by playing around on the piano, finding an intriguing chord progression, and putting heartfelt words to the melody.
The song is an unapologetic declaration of love and admiration for God, to God. It is a statement of faith in His power and gratitude for His love. Shared initially on her YouTube channel in 2017, the acoustic version of ‘Author’ proved popular, with Imani’s subscribers noting its ‘juicy’ melody, ‘beautiful’ lyrics and, ‘stunning’ sound, with many saying they wanted a copy.
Through passionate harmonies, resounding metaphor and even a multilingual line, the song seeks to be an anthem of submission and love poured out to our Heavenly Father.

Hailing from North London, Imani grew up in a musical home surrounded by instruments from keyboards to saxophones, trumpets to marimbas, with a jazz-saxophonist father and a family record player always filling the house with soul and jazz classics. Whether Aretha, Nina Simone, Soul II Soul or Brownstone, Imani has a love for music in the jazz, soul, neo-soul, and R&B genres and this reflects in her work. She learnt the trumpet from age 6, plays piano by ear, and has been singing since she can remember.
Heavily influenced as a teenager by R&B Gospel artists, including Mary Mary, Michelle Williams, and household names Cece Winans, Darwin Hobbs and Israel Houghton, Imani seeks to share God’s timeless gospel message through contemporary, inclusive sounds. Her rich, layered harmonies and truth-centred lyrics aim to envelope listeners with a tangible sense of God’s love. She stands on the belief that if the music is good, people of all backgrounds will be inclined to listen to and take to heart its message of hope.
