The ‘Who Are You?’ Mix-Tape is available on free download as a preview to the album ‘I’m A Christian.’ The albums challenge the identity of the modern day Christian through a series of thought provoking songs and in your face lyrics.
‘Who are you?’ experiments with the gospel sound blending tradition keyboards, organs and choirs with the Hip-Hop and R&B genre. Rapper and producer J.Walker represents the UK gospel label (The Lion’s Den) with other artists from the label such as Freeda, Martha Noelle and God’s Mic also featuring on the Mix-tape.
The lyrics, concepts and content on the album are overtly Christian, however the overall sound of the album should feel quite familiar to most Hip-Hop listeners and quite distant from the likes of Kirk Franklin. The Mix-tape follows the journey of young Christians in particular and the journey from being born again and new to the faith, followed by the pressures that come with having to carry the label Christian. Songs like ‘Pronounce Me Dead’ and ‘Whispers’ depict the sometimes awkward journey of leaving one life behind and starting another.
A 3D depiction of a Christian is created showing the everyday struggles that we all face just to pay our bills and the humorous fun side of life is evident on tracks like ‘Jesus With A Six Pack’ which play with the idea of lowly Christians trying to live up to Jesus and meet the expectations of men.
The album presents a fresh formula on how to create a gospel album and the amount of personality that can be squeezed out from a gospel rapper. Human nature is held up to a mirror with J.Walker of (TLD) offering himself up for judgement. But the question still remains. Who are you?
