Kevin Smith is no ordinary Gospel reggae singer. He is a man on a mission, bringing his vision of A Betta Tomorrow to life. This talented and versatile artiste is using his music to Speak Life into “dead” situations in Jamaica and the world.
After becoming a Christian in 1995, he recognized his love of dancehall music never died. Kevin decided he had to share this type of music with the Church at a time when this genre was considered taboo by most Christians. He began to chant his songs, which is a mixture of singing and dancehall deejaying. Nevertheless, it was not until 2008 that he embraced a career as a Gospel artiste with his first recording, Back Weh, which embodies his signature chanting style. His symbolic phrase, “You a hear me chant,” can be heard throughout much of his songs.
Even though Kevin was discouraged by many from singing dancehall Gospel, he took the risk. Consequently, this choice paid off and he has made an indelible impact on many lives through his music. He took another gamble when he decided to explore other musical genres, which has resulted in rave reviews for his first album, A Betta Tomorrow, an outstanding achievement which highlights his mastery of a variety of musical styles.
This multi-faceted artiste wrote most of the songs on the album. Many of the tracks have been getting extensive airplay and are crowd favorites. Among these are Upgrade, God Steppa, These are and Don’t Sell Your Soul.Kevin collaborated on some of the songs with popular Gospel reggae artistes such as DJ Nicholas, Ryan Mark, and Goddy Goddy. He has spread the Gospel through music across the Caribbean, Canada and the United States.
In 2010, God created a vision in Kevin’s heart to preach the Gospel with music. This dream evolved into “A Betta Tomorrow,” an evangelistic outreach featuring popular and upcoming Gospel artistes. The launch in Dump-Up Beach, Montego Bay was a great accomplishment and acted as the impetus to stage other concerts throughout the island. The last event in 2012 had over 20,000 people attending at Dump-Up Beach.
In 2011, Kevin was the recipient of Love FM’s Engagement Award for the “A Betta Tomorrow” outreach.
However, this visionary knows that what he does is more than about human accolades. Therefore, Kevin continues to keep his eye on the prize as he works towards “A Betta Tomorrow,” knowing only God can make a difference.
Here is Kelvin Smith with “Don’t Sell Your Soul”. A song that admonishes Christians to hold on to the love of Christ no matter the temptation. Listen and tell us what you think about it.
